Shaker Heights Legacy Fellows

 

The Shaker Heights Chapter of the League of Women Voters Greater Cleveland offers a fellowship opportunity for a motivated student of any gender who is a resident of and attends a high school located within Shaker Heights. The LWV Legacy Fellow learns about the importance of active and informed participation of citizens in government. The Legacy Fellowship begins on September each year and ends in June, and provides a $1000.00 stipend at the end of the Fellowship year.            


The Legacy Fellow assists the Shaker Heights Chapter and gains hands-on experience with:

  • Civic engagement with nonpartisanship and best practices in a partisan election
  • Voter Services and voter registration and petition drives
  • Forums and panel discussions, including publicity and on-site details
  • Advocacy
  • Optional opportunity to plan and promote an educational presentation of interest
  • Social media outreach

Student Project Application


We are happy to hear you'd like to complete a student-led project with the LWV!   The League is a nonpartisan organization that works diligently to empower voters and defend democracy. 

Below is a list of student project ideas that would help us fulfill our mission. We invite you to review the list and either choose one or two of these that fit your abilities or explain an original idea of your own. Our chapter has a limited amount of money to offer for each project and we will work with you to figure out the costs and how we can support your project.  

Project Idea Options

Communications Support: 

  • Social Media Graphic Design and Copy Creation
  • Monthly column writing featuring a student perspective and interviews on local issues
  • LWV event poster design and hanging posters in Shaker Heights locations
  • Informational video creation for LWV social media, website, and YouTube channel

Educational Forums Support:

  • Partnering with the Forum Committee to plan and implement an educational forum on student areas of concern like security, academic performance gaps, school funding, and inviting an expert to speak. 
  • Researching student area of interest and writing advocacy letters to media outlets or legislators 

Voter Services Support:

  • Learning how to register voters and creating a student group to lead educations sessions on the voting process

Meeting Observer Reports Support: 

  • Attending Shaker Heights City leader meetings and helping writing the chapter observer reports
  • Help maintaining our Vote411 website information on those running for office each election

Shaker Heights Student Members

We invite students from high schools within Shaker Heights to get involved in the work of the League. You'll find young members helping at events, observing City meetings, and working on projects. A student membership may also be an opportunity for students to earn service hours and government hours that go toward their high school graduation requirements.

  • Help register voters
  • Distribute vote-by-mail application forms
  • Attend and help organize local candidate and issues forums
  • Write action alert emails/tweets urging voters to contact legislators on issues like voter access
  • Research and take positions on public policy matters and lobby for change
  • Distribute free non-partisan voter guides and publicize vote411.org
  • Attend and help organize local candidate and issues forums
